Saintes an historic town in southwestern France, in the Charente-Maritime department. In Roman times, Saintes was known as Mediolanum Santonum, and during much of its history, the name of the city was spelled Xaintes.
Primarily built on the left bank of the Charente river, Saintes became the first Roman capital of Aquitaine. Because of its noteworthy Gallo-Roman, medieval and classical heritage, Saintes is today a tourist destination and offers some interesting photographic opportunities.
