In total the tour is said to consist of about 5,000 people, a huge infrastructure exists not just to support the riders but also just running the show and bringing it to the viewing public.
Whilst doing a bit of route research I came across one of the hotels that a couple of the teams were staying at and unlike the remoteness of many sports cycling is just not like that even it appears at Le Tour. Nobody batted an eyelid as I wandered around the hotels car park that had been converted into the teams “pits” taking photographs of the mechanics at work.
