Following our 2 days in Wilpattu we had a transfer day over to our home for the next few days near Habarana. Habarana is the gateway town for the Minneriya National Park one of the best spots to see Asian Elephant on the island but more of that tomorrow.
Our route from Wilpattu took us east along the A12 as far as Anuradhapura and then south down the A9 road a pleasant journey past numerous water lily covered lakes/wetlands where we had good sightings of many of the common waterbirds especially egret and heron species.

The Cattle Egret were particularly keen on using the Water Buffalo as a perch.

On arrival at our acommodation and once it had cooled down a bit we did a little birding in the local area with some success including finding a very sculky species the Indian Pitta albeit in very difficult fading light.
