Kandy – Birding

4 March 2020

Birding around Kandy means the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Udawatta Kelle Sanctuary – we visited the gardens in the morning and the sanctuary in the afternoon.

Both were in truth a little quiet with the sanctuary in particular a little dissapointing perhaps due to the unseasonably hot temperatures which we felt were beginning to impact on the birding.  That said we did have excellent photographable views of Indian Pitta and the endemic Sri Lanka Scimitar Babbler.

As an aside, whilst in the Botanical Gardens, we saw another birding group they were from Italy, fortunately we did not talk to them or get close to them, as little did we know we would more hear more about this group of birders in a few days time !
