By way of a postscript a few days after we left Sri Lanka and transited with Emirates through Dubai, Dubai Airport was closed to transit passengers and whilst we probably could still have got home on a direct flight we think in retrospect we did the right thing.
We felt a real sense of disappointment in having to leave Sri Lanka in such circumstances and so suddenly, and felt particularly sorry for our fantastic guide Thilli and the team at Walk with Jith. Indeed we feel very sorry for all those involved in the tourist industry in Sri Lanka who will be very badly hit by the total closure of the tourist business, particularly as this comes so soon after the Easter troubles of 2019.
We found Sri Lanka to be a fascinating country full of great sights and wonderful wildlife but more than anything the friendliest people we have encountered anywhere on our travels – we wish them well and hope to return to finish off our trip just as soon as we can.
